About This Workshop

Women's work, along with the notion of coming together to sew with your neighbours around a kitchen table, is central to the sense of community that women of earlier generations developed for survival and sanity.

In this session, participants will have the chance to complete the unfinished 'Fanciwork' of the women who came before us, learning to stitch using Opendrawer's collection of vintage napery and vintage embroidery transfers.

The session will take place in our fabric room, formerly the sitting room in our 1920s residence/present-day shop, establishing a sense of place both historic and current. While we sew, the group will discuss the notion of Women's Work and Fanciwork: the importance for previous generations of women of coming together to sew, and how this act was central to the sense of community they developed, and in comparison, how 'crafternoons' are serving this purpose in our current society; and the importance of contemporary craft practice and having time for leisure.

All skills levels are welcome. Beginners will learn simple stitches, and those with experience will be encouraged to explore something more complex. Participants will stitch on the old embroideries, as well as applying old embroidery transfers onto a vintage serviette, which they will embroider and take home.
