About This Workshop

Learn the basics of making jewellery in this four session weekly class.

Dates: Wednesday nights 6:30-9pm Oct 17, 24, 31 and Nov 7 2018

Cost: $225 for 10 hours over 4 classes (plus kit costs payable directly to the tutor during class, see below)

Guest Tutor: Claudine McPherson has been threading pearls for 25 years and currently does all the stringing and repairs for Ashburton Jewellery in High Street, Ashburton. Claudine's pearl jewellery is ever-popular in Opendrawer's shop.

Lesson 1: The first class will cover the basics of making earrings - learning about metals, tools, jewellery components and findings, where to buy them in Melbourne, and how to use them to make simple earrings with pearls and glass beads. If there's time, we'll cover wire wrapping techniques.

Lesson 2-3: Building on the first class, we'll explore the art of making necklaces and bracelets with glass beads. You'll learn how to construct them, using the wire techniques learned in the first class as well as using nylon coated wire (tiger tail) for glass beaded necklaces and bracelets. You'll also learn how to secure them correctly and all about the various types of closures, as well as some helpful tips and trade secrets. There's a lot in these two lessons, and you'll walk away with at least one colourful beaded necklace or bracelet that you've made yourself.

Lesson 4: The last class will cover knotting techniques. There are things you need to know if you intend to use twine to knot in between your beads or pearls. There are also many findings that are specific for this purpose, and which you use will depend on what you're threading. You'll learn some of the basics for working with linen twines, waxed cotton cords and silk cords, how to knot in between beads, how to start and end your knotted creation, and more about closures and clasps.

Materials fee:

Lesson 1: $15 each person. This will include everything you will need to make 4-6 pairs of earrings. Surgical steel fittings will be provided. If you require sterling silver, Claudine will have it available for purchase on the day. Credit card facilities available.

Lesson 2-3: $40 each person for both lessons inclusive, payable to Claudine. This cost covers your materials for two lessons. You will be able to chose from a vast collection of beads during these 2 weeks. Everything will be provided and you will be able to make several colourful glass bead pieces for your jewellery collection.

Lesson 4: Kit cost will be $20-$25 each. You can choose to thread a fresh water pearl necklace and learn how to knot in between each pearl or you can choose some lovely glass beads to work with. Pearls will be provided (real ones, not faux), along with silver clasp, silk and needles (cost for this option will be $25). Glass beads, cords and closures will also be provided, at a cost of $20.

Important: Bring your glasses if you use them. Good manual dexterity is required, as well as extreme patience.
