About This Workshop

Beginning with your own handwriting, this workshop will explore the effect of a range of tools (from brushes to conventional & handmade pens) on different paper surfaces, using a variety of inks and paints. We will be exploring the concept of 'text as texture', with the potential to incorporate it in your own creative works on paper or fabric later.

You'll be guided in this exploration by experienced calligrapher, Deirdre Hassed. This workshop is a natural follow-on from the earlier 'Enhanced Handwriting' class run by Deirdre, but can also be taken with no prior experience.

You will learn:

  • How to prepare sumi stick ink and walnut ink.
  • How to make your own 'Coke' metal pen.
  • Ideas for including text in works on paper or fabric.

Finish the class with a notebook containing trials of writing and textures, your own handmade pen, and different paper samples showcasing various tools & techniques.

Tutor: Deirdre Hassed

Deirdre Hassed has worked professionally as a calligrapher for over thirty years in both Australia and New Zealand, undertaking all manner of work requiring hand lettering - from formal commissions for government bodies to creative artworks with the written word at their core. She draws inspiration from the world's great philosophical wisdom traditions, often setting these texts to calligraphy using traditional and contemporary techniques. Currently she is exploring printing & dyeing methods and incorporating hand stitching on paper in her artwork, along with creating texture with text.

Deirdre's calligraphic work has been exhibited in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, where she has also regularly run workshops. In 2017 she published a book with her husband Craig Hassed: 'Illuminating Wisdom: words of wisdom; works of art'
